A Minnesota House panel is hearing testimony on a bill that would allow people in the U.S. illegally to obtain a driver's license, a long-held goal of immigration advocates that may gain more traction this year in a Democratic-Farmer-Labor controlled state government.

A new report on the experiences of Twin Cities immigrants and refugees recommends establishing advisory councils to inform policymakers, increasing cultural competency training for police and expanding social services, among other efforts.

Minneapolis and St. Paul city officials, community organizers, and business leaders participated in a study that offers solutions for helping immigrants and refugees. The report recommends expanding multi-language skills and improving police training. The findings will be presented to both city councils for implementation.

Immigrants and refugees accounted for almost 6 percent of population growth in Minneapolis between 2014 and 2019, according to a new research report. And with that growth came more consumers boosting the economy, as well as more employees in key industries.

"This report makes it clear what many of us already knew — immigration is a cornerstone of Minneapolis’ economic competitiveness," Jonathan Weinhagen, president and CEO of the Minneapolis Regional Chamber, said in a press release.

On June 16th, 2021, the Minneapolis Regional Chamber released a research report conducted by New American Economy that underscores the critical role immigrants and refugees in Minneapolis play in driving the region’s population growth, consumer spending power, and labor force.

On June 16th, 2021, the Minneapolis Regional Chamber, the City of Minneapolis’s Office of Immigrant and Refugee Affairs, and New American Economy presented the customized research report at a Minneapolis City Council meeting.

On March 10th, 2020, Grace Waltz, VP of Public Policy, joined Michelle Rivero, Director, Office of Immigrant and Refugee Affairs, City of Minneapolis and other leaders to update the Minneapolis City Council on various initiatives promoting immigrant and refugee inclusion in Minneapolis, including the Gateways for Growth Challenge.
